What do you get when you cross a Red Delicious with a McIntosh?

Posted by on 3/24/2017 to Apple Varieties
Here are a few clues...
  • It has a crunchy texture, sweet-tart taste and a creamy white flesh
  • It is versatile, good for just about everything; salads, baking, eating fresh, pies and freezing
  • It was derived from a seed grown in 1945 at the New York State Agriculture Experiment Station of Cornell University
And finally, in 1966... the Empire apple was born!

After harvesting thousands of seeds from that first one back in 1945, the Geneva team from Cornell released the final selection in 1966 at the New York Fruit Testing Association meeting.

According to the US Apple Association, the Empire cultivar is now one of the top 15 most popular apples in the United States!
